Chiefs trounce Rockford JV

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College's men's basketball team was in control from the opening tip to the final horn as they trounced Rockford University's Junior Varsity 127-77 on Monday evening in Erickson Hall Gymnasium. The Chiefs' point total was the third highest ever in Waubonsee program history, just four points shy of the record of 131 set last season against McHenry County College the end of January. The Chiefs' 65-point second half tied for fourth most in a half in the program's record book. The Regents (0-3), who tried to run with the Chiefs (4-0) throughout the game, committed 25 turnovers in the game. All 14 of the Chiefs that played dented the scoring column with five players reaching double figures. Waubonsee tallied 35 assists as a team, the third highest single-game mark in school history and shot 57 percent from the floor overall, despite second leading scorer power forward Chikasi Ofoma sitting out with an injury.

CJ Savage started the scoring with a three-pointer from the right corner on the Chiefs' second possession of the contest. A minute later a triple by Brayden Long and a fastbreak lay-in by James Parker pushed the lead to 11-0 before the Regents got on the board with a short jumper by Rashaun Smith. An alley-oop by Parker to Freddy Hassan for a two-handed dunk extended the lead to 15-2. Waubonsee's speed and depth helped the Chiefs quickly push the lead to over 20 points at 24-3 just seven minutes into the game. A fast break bucket by Dirk Nickson increased the lead to 39-11 halfway through the first half as the up-tempo game continued.

A long trey by the Regents' Terrance Jackson slightly cut into the deficit making it 43-20 as the visitors continued to try and run with Waubonsee. The Chiefs reached the 50-point threshold with 5:30 still left in the half on a three-point play by Ehi Ogbomo. Head Coach Lance Robinson utilized his bench throughout the half as Waubonsee's starters played sparingly. Rockford began to find the range from long distance and got the Chiefs' lead down to 18 with a minute remaining in the period. A long basket from the left corner by Smith at the buzzer ended the half with Waubonsee leading 62-41. The Chiefs shot 62 percent (26 of 42) from the floor in the first half, compiling 21 assists as a team while outscoring Rockford 19-0 in fast break points.

Waubonsee maintained at least a 20-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half. A three-pointer by Savage off an assist from Nickson followed by a lob from Nickson to Hassan for a power slam helped quickly build the lead up to 78-48 after five minutes of play. The Chiefs led by as many as 34 points before Robinson again went to his bench. A high arching shot off the glass by JJ Strojinc made it 90-55 with 11 minutes still to go. A minute later Kamea Chandler drilled a three from the left corner to extend the lead to 96-58 at the midway point of the second half.

Waubonsee reached the century mark when Desean Patton scored inside off a pass from Strojinc. The lead ballooned to 44 points on a put back basket by Patton to make it 106-62. Waubonsee, which scored 110 points in each of their first two games, reached that total when Tarell Harding powered his way to rim for a lay-in with five minutes remaining. The Chiefs took their biggest lead at 127-72 when Axel Motola Sanchez scored on a spin move down low and Eddy Redento scored inside too, with a minute and a half left in the game.

Nickson, the Chiefs' 'spark plug' point guard, came off the bench to pace the Chiefs with 18 points to go along with seven assists. Chandler added 17 points and handed out four assists. Hassan finished with 15 points, Savage contributed 11 and Josiah Mayes chipped in with 10 points. Harding added eight points, grabbed wight rebounds and dished out four assists. Patton and Strojinc both booked eight points as well. Waubonsee is on the road in Wisconsin the rest of November as they travel to Madison College, Blackhawk technical College in Janesville, and Milwaukee Area Technical College. The Chiefs are also scheduled to play in Benton Harbor, Michigan to square off against Lake Michigan College on December 2. After the Waubonsee returns home on December 4 to battle the College of DuPage with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off that evening. The women's game between the Chiefs and Chaparrals is set to begin prior to that at 5:30 p.m.
