(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Visiting Moraine Valley Community College upset Waubonsee Community College women's volleyball team on Wednesday evening. The Cyclones (6-9, 3-2) stunned the Chiefs (15-13, 3-2) by sweeping their Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match in Waubonsee's Field House. Waubonsee came out flat and allowed Moraine Valley to grab momentum early on, which they never relinquished it on the way to winning 25-14, 25-18 and 25-21.
The Cyclones tallied the first two points of the match before a solid block by Kailey Ramirez got the Chiefs on the scoreboard. Waubonsee eventually knotted the score at 4-all before four straight miscues gave Moraine Valley an 8-4 lead. The visitors maintained that four-point cushion and then suddenly extended it to 16-7 as the Chiefs looked out of sync while making several errors. Adrianna Larsen, who entered the contest 19th nationally among all NJCAA Division II players with 52 aces, registered her first of the match to momentarily stem the tide. But Moraine Valley continued to keep the momentum on their side as they surged ahead 22-11. Another Waubonsee return error ended the set in favor of the Cyclones 25-14.
Moraine Valley again recorded the first point in game two and grabbed a 5-2 lead in the early going. A power kill by Makayla McNally finally gave the home crowd a little something to get excited about. Waubonsee battled back to within a point at 7-6 before the upset minded Cyclones went ahead by five points. A spike by Ashley Collins and a violation by Moraine Valley got the Chiefs within 14-11. Moments later Ramirez registered a block, and Larsen smashed a kill from the back row to cut the deficit to one at 18-17. However, after a timeout by the Cyclones they booked the next five points to jump in front 23-17. A kill by Collins delayed the outcome for a minute before Moraine Valley finished off a 25-18 win.
Joey Wolgast started game three with an emphatic block for the first point. But the Cyclones continued to keep the momentum going as they took the next five points to again grab the upper hand. An ace by Larsen and a block by Ramirez got Waubonsee back within striking distance. Highlighted by a block by McNally and another by Molly Fitzgerald got the Chiefs to within 8-7. Waubonsee finally pulled even at 9-all on a kill down the right sideline by Collins. The freshman from Aurora Central Catholic recorded another kill moments later to give Waubonsee an 11-9 lead. Neither team led by more than two points over the next several volleys until a tandem block by Wolgast and Ramirez gave Waubonsee a 17-14 lead. However, Moraine Valley rallied to tie the game at 20-all as they looked to complete their stunning sweep. A short time later a kill by Collins gave the Chiefs a 22-21 lead before the visitors reeled off the next four points to take the match in three straight games.
Collins finished with a dozen kills and 13 digs to lead Waubonsee. McNally and Larsen each contributed seven kills, while Lexi Jacquez recorded 10 digs and Ramirez booked 18 assists. The Chiefs, who entered the contest 10th nationally in service aces with 225, managed just three for the entire match against the Cyclones.
