Softball finishes Spring Trip on high note

(Clermont, Florida) – Waubonsee Community College's Softball team wrapped up their annual Spring Trip with three straight wins to finish with a 5-5 record overall. After dropping the first three contests of their week-long excursion in central Florida, Coach Joe Spitzzeri's Chiefs knocked off Niagara County (NY) Community College 11-5, Mott (MI) Community College 8-4 and Cuyahoga (OH) Community College 8-2 to finish on a high note.

Freshman shortstop Emily Hurst led the way offensively with a very memorable week in the sunshine state. After starting off just 1 for 6 in Waubonsee first two games, the Rosary High School alumnus went on a record-setting streak over the Chiefs' next four contests. In the span of 16 plate appearances Hurst established a new school-record with 14 hits in 14 official at bats, eclipsing Alycia DeLuca's mark of nine straight hits set in 2017. The right-handed hitter drew a walk and lofted a sacrifice fly in between those hits on the way to driving in 11 runs during the four-game stretch.

Included in those 14 hits were a triple, six doubles and a grand slam home run against Mott. The Chiefs' lead-off hitter then ripped another grand slam home run the next day against Niagara County and finished the week with a sizzling .600 batting average (21 for 35). For the trip Hurst booked nine doubles, a triple, four home runs, drove in 18 runs, scored 17 times, stole four bases, drew five walks, posted a .650 on-base percentage and compiled a lofty 1.257 slugging percentage in 40 total plate appearances.

Sophomore Taylor Warren batted .452 with five doubles and won three games in the circle while registering a 3.18 earned-run-average over 39 and 2/3 innings pitched. Serena High School graduate Katie Baker ended the week with a .444 batting average with six stolen bases, while Kayla Tranter drilled seven doubles en route to batting. 367 overall. Waubonsee is set to return north and host Heartland (IL) Community College in their home opener on Wednesday, March 22 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
