Chiefs rout Lancers in final ISCC match

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Behind a 'hat trick' by Jayden Patino, Waubonsee Community College routed the College of Lake County 6-1 in their final Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match of the season on Tuesday afternoon. The Chiefs (5-7-1, 4-3) took an early lead on the Lancers (3-8-1, 0-6-1) and never looked back in while booking a convincing win on a beautiful Fall day on Waubonsee's pitch. The Chiefs grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the first half and proceeded to contain the Lancers throughout much of the match to secure a fourth-place finish in the ISCC standings.

Waubonsee nearly dented the scoring column in the fourth minute of the match when Patino got a breakaway, but his shot went wide right of the goal. Just thirty seconds later Waubonsee did get on the board when a shot from the left side by Christian Leon was blocked by Lancers' keeper Denny Matute. The Chiefs' Sebastian Leon quickly knocked the rebound into the right side of the net to start the scoring. In the 20th minute the Chiefs tacked on a second goal when Luke Rader delivered a perfect cross field pass to Mauro Munoz who quickly got ahead of the Lancers' defense and poked it past Matute into the upper left corner of the net. Waubonsee then picked up a third score just two minutes later when Patino, who missed five matches while being hampered by a knee issue, broke free again. The speedy sophomore from Aurora West High School got the ball on a breakaway and chipped a shot over a sliding Matute before the Lancers' keeper could knock the ball away. On a full sprint Patino leapt over Matute as the ball bounced into the back of the net for his first goal of the day.

In the 26th minute Patino began to turn the match into a blowout when he took a pass from Munoz, maneuvered around two Lake County defenders and blasted a shot into the left corner to make it 4-0. Meanwhile, the Chiefs defensive crew of Benjamin Sobecki, Lance Pasakarnis, Jonathan Carranza, Jostin Zombrano and keeper Daniel Gallardo kept the Lancers at bay. Lake County appeared to get on the board in the 42nd minute, but an offsides violation nullified the goal. Waubonsee had one final opportunity to add to its lead just before the half when a foul just outside the box gave the Chiefs a free kick. But the ensuing shot sailed just over the crossbar. For the half Waubonsee held a 9-3 advantage in shots overall as they dictated much of the action.

Patino then completed the 'hat trick' in the 60th minute when he got a great overhead pass from Asbel Vazquez. The Chiefs forward veered toward the center of the field and then rocketed a left-footed shot back to the right corner past Matute for his seventh goal of the season and a commanding 5-0 Waubonsee lead. The Lancers finally got on the board in the 69th minute to avoid the shutout. But the Chiefs got that goal back in the 86th minute when Rojan Tamang, off a nice centering pass from Allen Ortiz, smacked a shot past Matute from eight yards out to finish off the scoring. For the game Waubonsee outshot Lake County 18-9 overall and 11-7 in direct shots on goal. Gallardo finished with six saves in goal to pick up the win, while Matute was credited with five saves. Rader finished with two assists to give him four on the season. Waubonsee is in action again this coming Saturday, October 11, when they host Kennedy-King College from Chicago beginning at noon.
