(Sugar Grove, IL) - Waubonsee Community College scored a key victory in their Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) volleyball title defense. The Chiefs knocked off ISCC nemesis McHenry County College three games to one to improve to 3-0 in conference play. The defending champion Chiefs kept the pressure on the Scots throughout the match en route to improving to 9-4 overall. McHenry, ISCC champs the prior three years (2015, 2016 & 2017), fell to 10-7 overall and 1-2 in league play. Waubonsee came out sharp at the beginning, winning the first set 25-14. The Chiefs then took command by downing the visiting Scots 25-15 in the second set. Despite making 21 service errors on the evening, the Chiefs nearly swept McHenry out of the gym. The Scots led 20-16 in the third set before Waubonsee pulled even at 24-all. The see saw battle was eventually won by the Scots 27-25 to extend the match to a fourth set. Waubonsee grabbed an early lead and then held off McHenry to clinch the match with a 25-22 victory.
Anna Friedlund led the Chiefs with a dozen kills, while Sydni Coultrip added 10 kills, 11 assists and a pair of solo blocks. Rebecca Robinson chipped in with 25 assists and a pair of service aces, giving her 28 aces on the season to rank eighth nationally in that category among all NJCAA Division II players. Lydia Sabanish finished with 13 digs and two aces, Riane Tomsa contributed 12 digs, and Sydney Fedderly tallied eight kills and nine digs for coach Steve Kish's crew.
Waubonsee is in action again this coming weekend when the Chiefs host the 3-day Region IV Crossover Tournament. Waubonsee is set to Black Hawk College on Friday, September 13 beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Chiefs will then play South Suburban College later in the day at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday the Chiefs are set to square off against Illinois Valley Community College at 9:00 a.m. before battling Sauk Valley Community College at 3:00 p.m. The Chiefs finish up on Sunday by playing Carl Sandburg College at 11:00 a.m. and Kishwaukee College at 3:00 p.m.
