(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College made quick work of the visiting Spartans from Elgin Community College winning in three straight games. The Chiefs won the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match 25-13, 25-15 and 25-17. Waubonsee, 14-5 overall, improved to 3-0 in ISCC action to keep pace with Moraine Valley Community College at the top the league standings. The Chiefs and Cyclones are set to meet on Oct. 10 in Palos Hills in the ISCC finale for both.
Against Elgin Anna Friedlund registered a power spike to open the match and set the tone for Waubonsee. Maizy Larson followed with another emphatic kill as the Chiefs raced out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back in winning by a dozen points. In game two it was tied at three when Natalie Jones took over. The sophomore setter came into the match leading the nation in serving aces with 55. Jones proceeded to serve up four straight aces to put the Chiefs in charge. Later in the game Jones again took on serving duties and helped Waubonsee extend its lead to 19-11 with another ace. The Chiefs' Riane Tomsa then finished off the game with another ace.
Game three the Spartans got off to a great start by winning the first five points. Waubonsee responded quickly to tie the game at six and then took the lead on a block by Kayla Battle. A few minutes later the Chiefs led 12-8 before Elgin got within two at 14-12. Waubonsee scored the next five points highlighted by kills from Friedlund and Battle to take a seven-point lead. Two more kills by Battle got the Chiefs to match point and Friedlund finished it off with a power spike in the middle of the net.
Friedlund ended the match with 10 kills and a pair of aces. Jones booked 30 assists and six aces, while Battle added nine kills and two solo blocks. Larson chipped in with seven kills and nine digs, and Allie Cross tallied 11 digs in the victory.
The Chiefs are next in action this coming weekend when they travel to Kansas to take on some of the top teams in the country. Waubonsee is set to play Friday, Sept. 21 at 10:00 a.m. against the NJCAA's top-ranked Division II team in Coffeyville (KS.) Community College. The Ravens, defending National Champions, are currently 15-0. Waubonsee is also set to play the host school Kansas City Kansas Community College at noon on Friday, another top-25 ranked opponent. The Chiefs will then take the court on Saturday morning against Cowley (KS.) College (14-1) the second ranked team in the country. Waubonsee is scheduled to play Highland (KS.) Community College (14-2), the ninth-ranked team nationally, at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. The Chiefs return home to host the College of Lake County in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match next Wednesday, Sept. 26 beginning at 6:00 p.m. (CST).
