(Dixon, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's Women's Tennis team finished second at the 2020 Region IV Division I Tournament. The Chiefs led by two points in the team scoring after day one of competition at Sauk Valley Community College. However, Waubonsee stumbled on day two as McHenry County College raliied to take the top spot by just half a point, finishing with 16 points to the Chiefs' 15.5 points. With the slim victory the Scots earned an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament next spring in Mesa, Arizona. Bryant & Stratton (WI) College was third with 15 points, while the host school Sauk Valley finished fourth with 13.5 points overall. Moraine Valley Community College, the College of Lake County and Milwaukee Area (WI) Technical College were fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
Individually, Waubonsee did have a champion as freshman Jazmine Hernandez captured the number four singles title with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over McHenry's Elizabeth Lalond. The Chiefs had three individuals finish second and a doubles team also place second. Elizabeth Egerman finished second at number two singles, falling in the title match 6-0, 6-1 to Bryant & Stratton (WI) College's Valentina Kukuruzuvic. Angelina Hernandez placed second at number five singles, losing in the title match in a grueling three set battle 6-7, 7-6 and 10-5 in the tie breaker to McHenry's Morgan Paaske. Lauren Silva fell 6-1, 6-1 at number six singles to McHenry's Hannah Schuetzle. Waubonsee's number three doubles duo of Taylor Wyeth and Silva also placed second, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 match to McHenry's tandem of Lalond and Paaske in the finale. In addition, the Chiefs' Hailey Wilcox was recognized with the Sportsmanship Award, voted on by all the coaches of the participating schools.
Coach Douglas Passett's crew finished the Covid-19 abbreviated season 5-1 overall and earned the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title earlier this month, the 19th ISCC championship in the women's tennis program's history.
