(Aurora, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's Women's Tennis team opened their 2020 season by hosting a round-robin match Saturday afternoon against Milwaukee (WI) Area Technical College (MATC) and Bryant & Stratton (WI) College. Coach Douglas Passett's Chiefs earned a split at the Washington Park courts on Aurora's far west side. Waubonsee dominated MATC, downing the Stormers 9-0, while they were edged 5-4 by the Bryant and Stratton Bobcats.
Waubonsee's Hailey Wilcox used a big serve and some great finishing shots at the net to down MATC's Jazmin Marrow 6-2, 6-0 at number one singles. Elizabeth Egerman outlasted Sydney Venske at number two singles rallying for a 4-6, 6-0 and 10-4 victory in a tiebreaker. At number three singles Taylor Wyeth overcame some early unforced errors to defeat the Stormers' Natalie Kelly 6-3, 6-1. Waubonsee's Angelina Hernandez then held off Brooke Gnaw 6-4, 6-1 at number four singles, while twin sister Jazmine Hernandez topped Iris Lay 6-2, 6-1 at number five singles. The Chiefs also won both the number one and number two doubles matches. Wilcox and Egerman teamed up to beat Marrow and Venske 8-1, with Wyeth and Lauren Silva paired up to knock off the duo of Kelly and Gnaw 8-5. The Stormers defaulted at number six singles and number three doubles to give Waubonsee a sweep of all nine flights.
Against the Bobcats Wilcox was overwhelmed by the power game of Desiree Ahlberg in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. At number two singles Valentina Kukuruzuvic also topped Egerman 6-0, 6-0. Bryant & Stratton grabbed a 3-0 lead as Wyeth fell to Nikold Torres 6-1, 6-0. Waubonsee got on the board as Angelina Hernandez won her number four singles match over Kyana Ramos 6-2, 6-1. Silva then won her number five singles match in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 versus Kennedy Campbell. The Chiefs received a default victory at number six singles to even things up. Knowing they would get another default win at number three doubles, Waubonsee needed to win just one of the two remaining doubles matches. However, Wilcox and Egerman dropped their number one doubles match 8-1 to the tandem of Ahlberg and Kukuruzuvic. It all came down to the number two doubles match. The Hernandez sisters paired up and were edged 8-5 by the duo of Torres and Ramos.
