(Waco, TX.) - Waubonsee Community College's Women's Tennis team finished 25th in the nation at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. The Chiefs' tallied 2.5 points over the course of the three-day tournament at the Waco Regional Tennis and Fitness Center. Caitlin Gallagher, Julianna Pruneda and Lauren Karolewicz all earned points for Waubonsee which won the Region IV Tournament in November to qualify for the tournament.
Gallagher dropped her opening match in number two singles play in straight sets to Harford (MD) Community College's Kyning Tillinghast, the eighth-ranked player in the country. The freshman from Aurora West then won her first consolation bracket match 8-2 over the College of Lake County's Sydney Misiek. Gallagher was then eliminated after falling 8-0 to Lewis and Clark's Anna Holland.
Pruneda fell 6-2, 6-0 in her initial match in number three singles action against Central Alabama's Margaret Blackwell. The Aurora Central Catholic alumnus also was victorious in her consolation bracket match defeating Jacksonville (TX) College's Ashlynn Miller 8-3 to stay alive. However, Pruneda was then knocked out of the tournament by Pima (AZ) Community College's Meghan Houk 8-2.
Karolewicz was beaten in straight sets by Laredo (TX) Community College's Kelly Oliviera in number four singles play. Like her teammates, the Kaneland High School product bounced back in the consolation bracket by soundly defeating Jacksonville (TX) College's Kasey Steward 8-0. Karolewicz was then eliminated by Jones County (MS) Junior College's Kaylee McLaurin 8-0.
The Chiefs' Elizabeth Towell lost both of her matches at number one singles, falling to the eight-ranked player in the nation, New Mexico Military Institute's Georjemah Row and Copiah-Lincoln (MS) Community College's Gyselle Dala. Mary Collum also dropped both of her matches in number six singles play, losing to North Central Texas' Nathalie Washington and Eastern Arizona's Heidi Simons. Waubonsee's number one doubles pair of Towell and Gallagher were eliminated after dropping their matches against Pima (AZ) Community College 6-1, 6-1 and to Barton (KS) Community College 8-3. The Chiefs' number three doubles team of Pruneda and Collum lost 6-1, 6-4 to Jones County (MS) Junior College and 8-1 to Meridian (MS) Community College.
