(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team could never quite catch Moraine Valley Community College as the sixth-ranked Cyclones prevailed 75-62 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference contest. Moraine Valley, 15-1 overall on the season, held the Chiefs at arm's length throughout much of the game. Waubonsee pulled within four points late in third quarter before the highly touted Cyclones went on a 22-1 run to break the game open.
Moraine Valley led 22-16 after one quarter of play and extended their lead to 43-31 by the intermission. Waubonsee stayed within striking distance through much of the third period until a Maddie Kawall three-pointer from the top of the key cut the deficit to just four at 49-45 with 1:50 left. Moraine Valley then closed out the stanza on a 7-0 run to push their lead back to double figures. The Chiefs were limited to a single free throw over the next six minutes of play as the Cyclones built a 25-point lead. Waubonsee then closed out the game on a 16-4 run over the final four minutes of play.
Kawall paced Waubonsee with 18 points, while Kayla Battle chipped in with 15 points. Katie Beebe added nine points and seven rebounds, Alexia Nicolai grabbed eight boards, Tatyanna Smith contributed nine points, and Hayley Farren handed out four assists and snagged six rebounds. Moraine Valley out rebounded the Chiefs 58-48 overall, dominating on the offensive end of the floor with 27 offensive boards.
The Chiefs play again next Tuesday, January 15 when they travel to Chicago Heights to battle Prairie State College. Jim Williams' women's team set to play the Pioneers beginning at 5:15 p.m. while Dave Heiss' men's squad takes on the court at 7:15 p.m. (CDT). Waubonsee returns home next Thursday, January 17, when they host ISCC foe Morton College with the women's game starting at 5:15 p.m. and the men's contest at 7:15 p.m. in Erickson Hall.
