Waubonsee runners compete at Heartland

(Normal, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's Cross Country team began the season by competing at the Heartland Invitational. The Chiefs, under the direction of first-year coach Rebecca Goldsmith, had just four runners participate on the course laid out at Maxwell Park in Normal and did not qualify in the team scoring. The host school Heartland Community College won the men's race scoring a perfect 15 points. Vincennes (IN) was a distant second with 72 points, while Moraine Valley Community College was third with 78 points. Heartland also won the women's race with 33 points, with Vincennes again coming in second with 61 points and Kaskaskia taking third with 76 points.

Student-athletes from 10 different college's competed in the men's 8K race, with Brody Blackwell leading Heartland's pack of runners with a time of 28:13. Waubonsee was led by Dalton Klingensmith who finished 39th overall, covering the course in a time of 32:48. The Chiefs' Austin Curtis placed 55th and teammate Xander Lundblad was right behind him in 56th crossing the finish line seven seconds later. Runners from 11 schools took part in the women's 5K race, won by Vincennes' Meagan Moreno who crossed the finish line 30 seconds ahead of everyone else with a time of 19:17. Waubonsee's Daphne Kolody placed 27th overall out of 55 competitors, finishing with a time of 23:49.
